Overview
This course explores the concept of “harm reduction” and looks at approaches that accept that drug and alcohol use will often continue but can be made safer.
This session focusses on evidence-based, interventions that have been shown to save lives. Participants will be offered a range of practical suggestions that can be taught to and employed by, drug and alcohol users.

Who is the session for?
This session is appropriate for professionals from a wide range of organisations, who will or do encounter alcohol and drug use in the course of their work. It is particularly suitable for staff who are able to have detailed conversations about a client’s substance use.
Session Objectives:
This session is delivered in two parts:
Part 1
By the end of the session, participants will:
• Understand the concept of and rationale for, harm reduction
• Consider how the potential for alcohol and drug related harm has increased during recent years
• Be aware of evidenced “large scale” interventions that could be deployed by the UK that aim to reduce harm
Part 2
• Be able to identify a wide range of potential harms for the individual user
• Explore in depth, ways of practically reducing harm for an individual who uses drugs
• Be able to access resources that support health and reduce harm
